My journey to dog training started with my own dog, Mabel. Mabel came to us from a rescue organisation when she was a tiny puppy and has always been sensitive to the world. As she grew up (and got much, much larger!) I had to work hard and learn tons to support her as she became more reactive to the world. That journey has been stressful, scary, and overwhelming - and also joyful, satisfying, and full of love.
Our struggles fostered in me a passion for helping other dog guardians to better understand their dogs and to develop skills to support them, whatever their unique challenges. One of my favourite things is helping people learn to ‘read’ their dog’s body language and then seeing them actively advocate for their dog as a result - I feel like Dr. Doolittle every single time!
I completed the Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Comprehensive course in 2022 and will complete my Dog Trainer Professional course in February 2025. I’m simultaneously working on my Family Dog Mediator certification. I work from an entirely force-free, positive reinforcement perspective and love to create safe, happy learning environments for both ends of the leash.
In my non-dog time, I have worked in health care for over 15 years, with a special interest in trauma-informed care and clinical teaching. It has been fascinating to learn how much overlap there is between supporting humans in a trauma-informed way, and supporting fearful or sensitive dogs and their guardians. It has also felt like the most natural thing in the world to take my health care coaching skills and put them to use coaching dogs and their people.
I look forward to meeting you and working alongside you and your dog to help you find new ways to enjoy life together.
